Only 17% of internet users think online advertising is appealing and has an impact, according to research conducted by digital media research agency Connect Insight.

In fact half of internet users aged 55 plus actively avoid environments where advertising interrupts their usage on a site. They are more sensitive about advertising so the need for careful targeting is obvious. As consumers outgrow the youth market, and lifestyles and life stage begin to change, so do their digital identities, making targeting a challenge for online advertisers.

Faye Weeks, director of Connect Insight, said: “These headline figures only tell part of the story. The internet is a highly fragmented environment that users personalise based on their own needs and interests.

“It illustrates the need for advertisers to understand their target audience, their online behaviour, mindset and attitude to advertising in order to deliver impactful online communications.

“The fact that there are still so many negative associations with online advertising shows that advertisers have more learning to do about their target audiences online.”

Been following some interesting Fortune stories on Nissan the last few days regarding the importance of the Nissan Leaf. According to Fortune, Leaf sales aren’t that important, at least for now. It’ll take a few years to get production up to any meaningful numbers. Even then, since the Leaf is highly subsidized, Leaf sales could falter once government subsidies expire.

And yet falling Leaf sales wouldn’t be the end of the world to Nissan.

Ask 100 people what they think of when they think of Nissan and you’ll probably receive 100 different answers.

Yet, ask someone what they think of Ford and they’ll probably say pickup trucks or the Mustang. Honda is fuel economy. Toyota is the Prius and reliability – or at least it was.

Thus, Nissan is hoping to turn its image into innovation, particularly green innovation focused on zero emissions.

“Nissan has many of the same qualities as our Japanese competition, but no single one rises to the top,” said David Reuter, a Nissan spokesman. “We believe zero-emission leadership, led by the Nissan Leaf, will be a clear differentiator for the Nissan brand.”

Consequently, even if Leaf sales remain a niche, akin to the success of the Toyota Prius, the Leaf marketing campaign will still have achieved success. The Leaf will still bring in consumers, even if they don’t buy a Leaf. More important, Nissan hopes, when one thinks Nissan in the future, they’ll think Leaf, zero emissions and innovation – even if Leaf sales only account for tiny fraction of overall Nissan sales.

Hopefully, some day zero emission vehicles won’t just be the cornerstone of marketing success but overall sale’s success.

Once the people you are following get up there in quantity it can be challenging, if not impossible to follow them and cut through all of that noise. I’m a bit late to the party (what else is new) but I just took the time to create a few lists on my Twitter account to organize the people who truly provide value into lists that make sense to me. Here are the basics:
To create a new list, follow these instructions:
- Visit the profile of the first user you would like to add to your list
- Click the list drop-down, which looks like the icon above
- At the bottom of the drop-down menu, click “Create list”
- Enter the credentials of your list, and choose whether others can see it or whether it is private
- Check to see if the user you wanted to add was successfully included in that list: to do this, click the list drop-down. A blue check will be added next to lists in which that user is included (shown below under “Adding or Removing People”)

Some notes about Lists. You can have 20 lists per user; List names cannot begin with a numerical character, and there is a maximum of 500 accounts on each list

And below are five tips that may be helpful:

- Decide what categories or topics are truly of interest to you and start a list for each. Remember, this is your playground, so you get to decide what meaningful means, and how each person fits in to that description. No rules here.
- don’t make it hard. Add people as you come across them either as new followers, or while reading a Tweet you particularly like.
- decide if each list should be public or private. Family might be private; most others public would be my guess. Remember, for the most part, you are using Twitter to be “findable” by search engines and others. So public is the way to go.
- peruse other Tweeps lists to find people you want to follow. Like Groups, it’s a great way to fish where the fish are.
- in placing someone in one of your lists you are giving them visibility and findability. It adds to the engagement factor that is so critical to social media success.
